Migrating digital art to new design site

Ginger wrote this on July 26th, 2008

I’ve been working hard to build a new site dedicated to my web design and digital art work. I’m still working on some of the details, but the Digital Art Galleries are up and running. I’m offering web design, search engine optimization, custom digital artwork & gift items, and business coaching. If you enjoy 3D art, fractal art, or digital paintings, check it out over at my Custom Design and Digital Art blog.

Between building the new site, and figuring out all the new WP v2.6 bugs, I’ve hardly had time to play some of the new games that have come out. I did find the time to finish “Fitness Frenzy” though, it was a nice break from all the coding work I was doing. I’ll be posting more about that as soon as I’ve caught up on some much needed sleep. In the meantime, if you’re looking for a fun game to pass the time, Fitness Frenzy is worth the download!

WordPress 2.6 update issues and finding older versions

Ginger wrote this on July 22nd, 2008

I run several blogs for myself, and design clients. Taking over the maintenance of new blog clients is perhaps the biggest headache I have to deal with. Some haven’t been updated since version 2.0, so there are some pretty serious issues I’ve been dealing with lately, the most common being the “missing catagories” dilema. [Read about it in the WP support forums here, here and here.]

In one of the support forum discussions, it was suggested to update older versions to v2.3 first (since this is when the “tag” ability was introduced to the software, which required a major overhaul and update of the databases), and then updating to v2.6.

The first issue I had when finally deciding to try this, was finding a download for v2.3, which I finally found here. I wouldn’t suggest using these archived versions for any other purpose, as there have been security fixes in each progressive version, but in cases like this update problem, this comes in very handy.

This doesn’t help, of course, if you’ve already tried the upgrade, and lost all your categories… in that case, the work around I used on my first try (failure lol) was found here. Manually inputting your category information into your database via MyPHPadmin is no fun, but it did work. Since I’m facing an upgrade of a blog v2.0 that has over 56 categories, I’m going to try updating it to v2.3 first, as I have no desire to do that much data input.

Once our weather improves, I will be trying this “update in stages” approach. Right now, I’m afraid we’ll lose power while I’m in the middle of it. I’ll post again when I’ve finished the project to let you know how it worked out.

The best advice I have at this point is BACKUP everything first! Database, WP files, content folder, themes, plugins… everything! If the very worse happens, you can then simply revert to where you were before you started!

Adding new comment functionality

I just found a great new plugin for WordPress that will allow you to reply directly to a specific comment! The original site of the plugin developer is in Chinese, so if you get confused like I did, here’s the official WordPress download link

Is DIGG always so damned slow? ugh! I’ve joined Digg, del.icio.us, and am now typing up my Technorati Profile. What a process!

Remember not to forget

It irks me that the “code” tag will not work in WordPress posts if you’re running the NicEdit java script, so I must make my way over to their forum to see if there’s a work around for this. I’m also getting a strange error: no object found in IE (gotta love FireFox!). Seems to be an argument in the search function… good reason to get rid of it LOL. Ugh. Must sleep now, hubby’s gonna flip when he finds out I was up all night again. LOL

Being a perfectionist

… is exhausting. Although I’ve searched for hours to find a theme that I could tweak and build on, I can see that I’m going to have to create my own from scratch if I’m going to be satisfied. Bear with me while I do so.
