Finally! A platformer game that I can play solely with my mouse instead of being forced to use the keyboard!! It’s been a while since I could enjoy this kind of game, and that’s exactly what I did! You play as Alex, a cat who was searching for treasure with his sister. Before game play begins, you find an amulet that breaks as soon as you touch it, which wakes up the sleeping natives. They steal your sister away and hold her for ransom until you return all the pieces of the amulet to them.
On your journey to find the missing pieces to the amulet, you meet many enemies that will try to stop you from exploring the many different levels around the island. Lucky for you, it only takes a well executed jump on an enemy’s head to kill them. Collecting coins as you run along, you’ll also find secret areas that hide bonus points and amulet pieces. Each level is timed, but there is plenty of help along the way. Friendly penguins alert you of dangers ahead, and give you hints on how to defeat them. Lava will hurt you, but you may be lucky enough to find special boots that will protect you for a short time.
Alex can swim in the water, and has a special attack for defeating underwater enemies, but there are underwater mines as well, so you’ll just have to swim around those. Extra life is easily found within your travels, so any life you lose while falling in lava, or fighting an enemy can be regained. Longer underwater levels come with an “air bar” to let you know when you’re running out of oxygen. When you need more air, simply stop inside a bubble stream to fill up again.
I only played this one for the free trial period (one hour), but quickly saw how it could become very addicting. Finding the secret areas is something that you could spend a lot of time on, and I’m assuming that most of the amulet pieces you need to finish the game are hidden in these secret areas.
A side project that is offered to you is upgrading your retirement island. You can spend the coins you collect throughout your adventure on building up a deserted island that you plan to retire on. If nothing else, this gives you a reason to collect all those coins along the way. Alex Gordon is definitely worth the download. Enjoy!
