WordPress comments plugins

I used a lot of the comment plugins I found in this article, and to my surprise, they all worked with the new version of WP. (v2.3.3) I’m glad, though, that I read the full instructions for one particular plugin before installing it, because it won’t work if you have some of the other comment plugins I’ve used. I tend to use as many plugins as I can find, so have dealt with incompatibility issues in the past.

Incompatible Plugins

The following plugins cause issues with WP Ajax Edit Comments

* The Comment Luv Plugin (to my surprise, this plugin gives you and your commentors the ability to edit your comments, so the issue is resolved anyway!)
* Any plugin that posts comments via Ajax and doesn’t require a page reload. An example plugin is JQuery Ajax Comments.
* Any plugin that loads jQuery improperly without queuing it with WordPress.
* WP PostRatings on ISO-8859-1 blogs. Characters load and save incorrectly.
* Google Ajax Search

I’m currently using the Comment Luv plugin, and the article recommends using an Ajax powered edit plugin. I guess my point here is to make sure that you always read the entire list of features, details, and notes by the plugin authors. Doing this myself, I saved myself a huge headache.

I’m also using the following plugins to make my comment area more enticing for my surfers:

  • MBLA: Use avatars from services like Gravatar and MyBlogLog in your posts, comments and pingbacks. Remember to change options at Options -> MBLA. By Jan Olsen.
  • NiceEdit: NicEdit is just 30kb in size, and gives a full featured text editor. Check out the comments field of this post to see it in action. It’s much easier to format a comment this way.
  • I still want to install these plugins:

  • Subscribe to comments: Subscribe to Comments is a robust plugin that enables commenters to sign up for e-mail notification of subsequent entries. The plugin includes a full-featured subscription manager that your commenters can use to unsubscribe to certain posts, block all notifications, or even change their notification e-mail address! I use this on all my other WP sites, and love it!
  • NoFollow Free: NoFollow Free removes the “nofollow” attribute from your wordpress blog’s comments (precisely from the author’s links) and/or from the comments text links and it inserts (if you want) an image band at the top of your pages with the phrase: “NOFOLLOW FREE”.
  • Clickable Smilies: I’m a smiley addict, so I’ve got to have them in my comments! Smilies make the discussions more fun for everyone, as they offer a great way to place the correct emotion in with your text. Less misunderstandings this way… and they’re so cute! LOL I just hope that this will work with the new version of WordPress, I’ve hacked my own copy of this plugin for years now due to it no longer being supported.
  • I have to tear myself away from the computer for a while, but I’m pretty satisfied with all that I’ve learned today. I had to re-write a lot of the CSS in order to get all these plugins working the way I wanted them to!

      I used to use ajax edit comments but I get an awful lot of comments at my blog and it seemed to slow down the page load quite a lot. I’ve removed it now and the pages are loading much quicker!

      I was also surprised when I saw that every plugin was working perfectly when I changed my wp version. We have to congratulate wp for the great work they are doing for all the bloggers!
